What Is an SSDI Reconsideration?

Only 20% of disability applications are approved on the first try. But with Advocate’s expert support, you can file a strong Request for Reconsideration and improve your chances of approval.

The clock is ticking. You must act fast.

After an SSDI or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claim is denied, you have 60 days to request a reconsideration. This is your first appeal stage. It gives you an opportunity to correct errors, provide new medical evidence, and strengthen your case.

Why is the Reconsideration Stage Important?

Even small mistakes can lead to denials. A missing document, the wrong phone number for a doctor, or a lack of clear medical proof can all cause denials. Reconsideration gives you a chance to fix these issues. That’s why it’s so important to understand your denial and submit a stronger, more complete appeal.

Our clinical staff reviews your records to find key evidence supporting your claim. We handle the paperwork, deadlines, and strategy so you don’t have to face this alone.

We help you strengthen your case and meet requirements by:

Carefully reviewing your denial notice to understand the reason.
Analyzing your medical records for gaps and inconsistencies.
Gathering updated medical evidence from healthcare providers.
Requesting a Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) form from your doctor.
Completing forms SSA-561, SSA-3341, and SSA-827 accurately and on time.
Writing a convincing appeal letter that addresses errors in your initial application.
Ensuring everything is submitted within the 60‑day deadline.

What Happens After Filing for Reconsideration?

Once your request is submitted, your case is reviewed again by the Social Security Administration. This typically takes three to six months.

If your claim is approved, you’ll get a lump-sum back payment and monthly benefits going forward. If it's denied again, the next step is to request a hearing with an administrative law judge (ALJ). That process can take six months to two years.

Feeling overwhelmed? You don’t have to be. Advocate’s disability representatives can help and you pay nothing unless you win.

I struggled for so long getting disability until Mrs. Hope represented me! She is the most polite and explained everything to me in terms I could understand! When I needed something, if she didn't have the answer, she found it for me. I am forever grateful for all the help provided and much appreciative for helping me win my case 😊
