What Happens After Filing for Reconsideration?

Once your request is submitted, your case is reviewed again by the Social Security Administration. This typically takes three to six months.

If your claim is approved, you’ll get a lump-sum back payment and monthly benefits going forward. That process can take six months to two years. If it’s denied again, the next step is the ALJ hearing.
